Take Up Your Bed and Walk

Please enjoy this session from my live workshop “Embracing the Wisdom & Grace of Francis of Assisi” from 2024.
The journey of becoming conscious will always require some kind of rejection, some kind of take up your bed and walk, take up your bed and walk. So if you’re bitching about it—stop it. Take up your bed and walk, and don’t look back.
The wisdom and teachings of the great saints never lose their relevance. In fact, the gifts they left behind often seem to grow in power, blessing the human community in ways that transcend time. This is especially true of the beloved Italian saint, Francis of Assisi. In this workshop, we will explore the life and mystical teachings of Francis—his profound love of creation, his surrender to the Divine, and the simple but extraordinary truths that shaped his spiritual path. And we will do so in the sacred place where he was born, lived, and is buried.
Together, we’ll reflect on Francis’s role as the patron saint of ecology, and how that legacy speaks urgently to our time. We’ll explore the idea of “bio-spiritual ecology,” a powerful recognition that we are co-creators of our world, and that events happen through us—not to us. This theme leads naturally into the spiritual evolution Francis experienced, a journey from ego to soul that mirrors the path many are walking today. Through deep reflection, we’ll also consider the role of prayer, grace, healing, and why Francis viewed humility as essential to the soul’s health—and its hidden wealth.
