ENTERING THE CASTLE: THE MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE OF DIALOGS WITH YOUR SOUL WITH DR. CAROLINE MYSS
Each year I host a workshop in January at Miraval, a lovely health spa near Tuscan, AZ. Because of its beauty and the intimate setting of Miraval, this atmosphere is particularly conducive to workshops of a spiritual nature. The month of January makes this workshop all the more relaxing because of the post-holiday/beginning of the year energy that sets everyone’s energy in motion for renewal.
This year, the theme of the January workshop is, ENTERING THE CASTLE, based on the material from my upcoming book by the same name. ENTERING THE CASTLE is a workshop in which I guide you into your soul and lead you into dialogue with your interior self that hold the potential to change your life. The material is taken from my upcoming book of the same name in which I explore the seven mansion of the soul described by Teresa of Avila in her classic mystical text, THE INTERIOR CASTLE. Teresa said that the soul was like a crystal that had seven mansions and each mansion had many rooms. Her template of seven mansions intrigued me as I have worked with a template of seven chakras, seven sacraments, the seven levels to the Tree of Life, and many other archetypal maps that describe the soul as an ascending vessel of seven levels. In this workshop, as in my book, ENTERING THE CASTLE, I have used Teresa’s work as the template for a contemporary work on mysticism, applying her material to people who are active mystics in the world today.
A BIT OF BACKGROUND:
It is my deep belief that a mystical renaissance has begun, a natural outgrowth of these past decades of the new age spiritual movement. More and more people are discovering the rich and inspiring writings of the great medieval as well as contemporary mystics, such as Teresa of Avila, Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, Ignatius of Loyola, John of the Cross, Thomas Merton, Rumi, and so many more, because mysticism is the natural progression in one’s spiritual life. But perhaps there is even more underlying the reasons for why people are finding the lives and writings of medieval and contemporary mystics so intriguing. People are discovering a passion for the Sacred in an intimate way, deeper than through spirituality, and they are feeling a pull to be of service in some effective way that they have yet to identify or language.
The new age set in motion a discovery of the Self. These past fifty years set us wandering into many spiritual directions and wondering about the world behind our eye – that of our psyche and spirit -more than the world in front of it. From that emerged our contemporary spiritual culture, which includes everything from holistic health to our realization about the personal Self – and so much more. And now it’s time to move beyond that stage of self-discovery and step beyond the boundaries of the Self. A new calling is at work within the collective psyche, that of the contemporary mystic – the individual who has the soul of the mystic but is called to live within the world as a “mystical activist” – to be of service in this world wherever that individual is placed – and that is a point of emphasis in this workshop. The mystics of old changed the world with the power of their souls, many never leaving their monasteries. What they discovered about the power of their soul and of an intimate connection with the Divine is what we now need to discover. And the second quality that made these mystics immortal was that they were activists, even while living within monasteries. Theirs were lives of service to humanity in countless ways; through prayer, through healing, through maintaining positive attitudes during times of challenge, through service to others and their community, through recognizing that every one of their actions mattered because every action was a channel for and of grace.
So many workshops are focused on “the self” and these are good and positive workshops. We also need workshops that teach you how to be a source of power in this world through the vessel of your soul – not through a business, not through a career, not by moving from here to there – but because you have finally learned how to channel grace. This is the theme and focus of ENTERING THE CASTLE.
Many, many people have the characteristics of being “mystical activists”, but many of these people do not know it. Everything from their passion to be of service to their need for a spiritual life and even to their experiences with the “dark night of the soul” and the struggles with spiritual depression are indicators that they are experiencing a deepening of a spiritual process that needs to be recognized as contemporary mysticism.
I invite you to come to this extraordinary workshop in January which will begin with a discussion of mysticism both historically and as it has evolved into the contemporary mysticism that is emerging in our spiritual culture. Then Teresa of Avila’s work will be introduced as the foundation for the personal work you will do upon “entering your own castle”, you own soul. This workshop is a very rich intensive, a very active retreat, in which an emphasis is also placed upon learning what it means to channel grace and to direct that sacred substance into acts of healing.
