ALAS....IT’S OVER....

Nov 3, 2004

Standing in line to vote this morning, I listened to many people expressing their relief that the “day” had finally arrived. Some people were discussing whether we would know by the end of the day who the next President of the country would be. Some said “yes” and others maintained we were heading for another long and exhausting recount. But every one was in agreement that “enough was enough.”

Having just completed a long book tour that took me across the country during a political campaign season, I can tell you that the psychic atmosphere even in small discussions in book store audiences ended up getting not so much “political” as curious about what was happening in the greater atmosphere of the world arena – and of our future as a global community. Politics was just impossible to avoid, no matter how much I tried to stay on the topic of my new book. All I had to do was open the floor to questions and inevitably someone would say, “What’s your opinion of what’s going on in the country and in the world right now?”

Of course I have deep rooted opinions about these matters, but I discovered early along the way that engaging in any discussion whatsoever about the candidates or political issues – ground level politics – only ignited tempers regardless of whether a person was a Democrat, Republican, Liberal, Conservative, or Independent. Perhaps the best one can say is that this election has awakened a passion to make a difference in the future of this country, to make one’s voice heard, and that awakening is a very positive thing.

Still, I found that I very much wanted to share with people some of the research I have been doing during these past three years on the Sacred Contract of America, a journey into the mystical roots of this nation. The sharing of this information seemed at least safe in that it was historic, mythic and therefore intriguing, and most of all, it had and has no connection to the ground level politics of today. Rather, a sharing of the many mystical legends and historic events, including insights into the history of the Freemasons who influenced the beginning of this nation, raised the collective level of pride in the founding vision and purpose of this nation. I find it absolutely intriguing that a movie is scheduled for release that is based upon some of these mythic facts about America’s founding…interesting timing to say the least. Why, I wonder, is that happening? Why now? And why that topic? It’s a bit of an American Di Vinci Code, to be sure, but still it is also an indicator that the theme of mysticism and the search for our mythic and mystical roots is “in the air”, as they say.

And if it’s “in the air”, it’s coming from us…..so what’s going on in us? What are we feeling, sensing, experience, or more to the point, seeking, that would collectively make our social mind ripe for mythic books and movies such as the Di Vinci Code and this new movie that is essentially a mystery in which Nicolas Cage goes on a search for a treasure, using clues, such as the pyramid on the dollar bill, to track the treasure? Are we on a greater mythic search at some level? Did 911 “shake us to our American soul” so deeply that at the archetypal level we are subtly, collectively seeking a way to reconnect to the spiritual roots that inspired the purpose of this nation so long ago? Certainly since 911 America has changed its direction, not the least of which is that America has invaded another nation. And then there is the increase in “terrorist consciousness”, a new focal point for Americans that has never before been a part of our mainstream thinking. Yet, these and all the other physically obvious changes that I can list are also, in my opinion, symbolic and reflective of spiritual processes that are unfolding within each of us at various levels of intensity. At the very least, they are impacting each of our lives because we are Americans or – if not an American, then living in America and from that perspective, the war and terrorism are having an impact on each of us psychically, if not directly spiritually. Who knows how much that collective tension filters into our individuals energy fields….I don’t know, but I believe it does.

But even beyond that obvious level, my experience with thousands of people through these past years, and in particular the past five years, has led me to believe that many if not most people who are a part of our contemporary spiritual culture are simultaneously undergoing yet another level of awakening in which their intuitive life has reached a “burn-out” point. “Intuitive Burn-Out”, like “Intuitive Overload”, which was the subject of my October Salon, is a very real psychic condition. A person can reach a point at which no interior data is forthcoming, or what little there is, is essentially psychic mud. A question worth examining is, “Is a psychic crisis the same as a spiritual crisis?”, and I address that in my up-coming November Salon, but suffice to say at for the sake of this discussion that there is a substantial difference between a psychic crisis and a spiritual one. The initial “symptoms” are the same but then they split into their own directions, each with characteristics specific to their inherent natures. It has been my experience in recent years that most people are experiencing or have experienced symptoms of either a psychic or spiritual crisis, and most have no idea that such a phenomenon even exists. So common is this phenomenon, however, that it inspired me to create a year-long CMED program aimed at guiding people to establish a clear connection with their intuition and then to move through the limitations of their intuitive skill – because intuition IS only a skill – and open the passageway into the guiding voice of mysticism. Mysticism, unlike intuition, is not a skill, but an unfolding process of spirituality, one that leads to the establishment of an interior life in which Divine guidance and soul-revelation becomes the light of one’s life. I believe that a person “hits the wall” of his or her intuitive skill when it is time for them to move forward into a deeper and more mystical inner life, yet that quality of spiritual life needs spiritual direction. A person needs a guide, and that is what this year-long program is intended to be - a type of year-long retreat in which the person maintains the “rules” of the mystic while also maintaining his or her ordinary life. I believe this particular program is among the most essential I have ever created because it has been designed to be a “bridge between dimensions” for people who are “called to a deeper life”, yet fear that moving forward will cause their familiar physical life to collapse. That fear is an illusion, yet without a guide and proper spiritual direction, walking across that bridge, past the limitations of your intuitive life and into your deeper mystical life, can be just too overwhelming.

My feeling, not to drop us back down to the ground level too swiftly, is that deep processes of transformation are at work within each of us. Everything in our world – from ground level politics to movies that have themes of mysticism about our nation – are threads connected to a greater archetypal pattern reflecting a Divine plan for human evolution. I know that at the end of the day, each of our lives holds more power to make a difference to the whole of this map of life than we can ever calculate – and maybe that’s a good thing. But included in that truth is that no event or activity, no matter how great or small, including all the “events and activities of our psyche and soul”, occurs outside the whole of this scheme of life. A move toward collective mysticism – even historic mysticism – is an indicator, albeit a tiny one, that we are on a road headed toward a new brand of mainstream mysticism that has been planted in our souls. We don’t want to live in monasteries any longer – at least not most of us. We need to create a new template in which the mystic can exist and thrive outside the monastery, able to channel grace and guidance, and not be crushed by the psychic weight of the outside world. That may be a long way off, to be sure. But you – each of you – is a very real pioneer in that new world.

Incidentally, my CMED “Intuition to Mysticism” program begins this coming March and details about the CMED Institute and this program are available on the site. This class is filling rapidly, which I take as a very positive sign that the time is right for engaging in a year-long program of understanding intuitive skills, awakening to mysticism and a deeper spiritual life, and finally, learning the fundamentals of healing, the natural art of a conscious individual.

God bless all of you – and America…..and the rest of the world.

A New CMED Institute Workshop Series:
From Intuition to Mysticism: A Personal Journey into Our Passion for God

Since we introduced our first CMED Institute on "Sacred Contracts and the Study of Archetypes" in 2002, it has been a remarkable success. People from as far away as Turkey, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand make the trip three times a year to participate in a program that explores their archetypal patterns and the agreements they made with the Universe prior to this life -- agreements that determine their experiences and relationships in the physical world.

In the past year, many of these students have asked me, "What's next?" They wanted to know how they could continue this work after their two-year CMED program is completed. I have given a great deal of thought to that question and, motivated by their interest and by extraordinary recent experiences, I am announcing with deep excitement a second CMED program: From Intuition to Mysticism: A Personal Journey into Our Passion for God. This program was inspired in part by the profound changes that have occurred in my own life during the past two years, beginning with the first CMED Institute and continuing into the subject of my most recent book, Invisible Acts of Power. This book is a compilation of more than 1,200 letters sent to me by wonderful people who shared their experiences of acts of service that they received from family, friends, and strangers, as well as acts of service they provided to others. As I organized this book, I met with one extraordinary discovery after another about the nature of generosity: why we are giving, why we must be giving, and why we cannot be generous. I came to understand many aspects of the human spirit that I had never encountered before, not the least of which was the realization that generosity is a biological necessity.
