A Message From Caroline Myss

Here is a sample of the SEPTEMBER SALON

COMPETING FOR CREATION: Thoughts Fighting Their Way into Form

In our previous Salon, we discussed how Heaven answers our prayers. I made a special point of noting that Heaven often goes to great lengths to introduce absurdities into one’s life in response to prayers. Not all prayer, mind you. Prayers that come from the depths of one’s soul and that carry life-changing potential seem to bring out a more engaging side of the gods, positioning a human being between the whims of heaven and the constraints of earth. For instance, you may be directed to do something others perceive as foolish or useless. But what better way to become separated from the power of the opinion of others than to become the target of their critical commentaries while coping with guidance that only you can perceive? We are afraid to be criticized by others when, in fact, it’s something worth striving for. I mean, look around you. How many people do you see living flawless lives?

The most intimidating aspect of observing the guidance that another person receives comes in sensing its authenticity and potential for that individual’s experience of spiritual intimacy. Whether you call that energy grace or guidance, you can feel and perceive it around an individual. When I’ve met people whom I later described as having “great potential,” I have come to realize that this great potential could simply be inactive grace. Perhaps Heaven distributes that energy like raw goods and includes along with it a sizable life challenge that gives that grace focus and intent. A new life challenge is meant to activate or animate that grace, to cause one to need that grace to confront that specific challenge. And in the process, the grace becomes absorbed into one’s psyche and spirit, transforming you by heightening your state of consciousness. Such is the way of personal spiritual development.

But now let’s continue on the topic of guidance, beginning by examining what exactly guidance is. Specifically, how can you discern whether you are receiving genuine spiritual guidance or are simply manufacturing it?

Spiritual guidance is inspiration or instruction that flows from a Divine source. Under the heading of “Divine source” come angels, saints, and personal spirit guides. And then, of course, there is direct contact with God. (There is also the category of miscellaneous guides, including those who have passed on before us as well as nature spirits, but for the purposes of this Salon, I am sticking with major league guides.) When I speak of spiritual guidance in general, I include images of pre-birth recalls that people have shared with me, such as remembering being given their life assignments. The importance of such memories is the implication that every detail of one’s life journey has a value and purpose far too significant for the human spirit to comprehend. That guidance plays an active role in setting our life’s agenda prior to incarnation implies that the unincarnated human soul is about to be born into a domain in which the power of choice has authority; therefore, learning to attune to an inner voice for direction is of great importance. This also suggests that when we are detached from higher guidance, we have the potential of creating – or channeling – a variety of thought-forms of a lesser quality.

People have occasionally reported having near-death experiences that included some recall of their pre-incarnation experience. Some of these people have said that they were given instructions to “drink from the River of Forgetfulness,” because it would be a painful burden to incarnate with the memory of where they had come from. I remember clearly the story of one man who said that he had ignored those instructions and “jumped over the River of Forgetfulness,” and incarnated in full consciousness. He said that he was fully conscious while in his mother’s womb as well as during his birth, infancy, and all through his childhood. He also said that when he was seven, he was hit by a car and had a near-death experience. He encountered his guide and was relieved that this life was over -- until his guide told him to get back into his body, because his work on earth was not yet complete.

AS FOR YOU

The same is true for you, of course. Your thoughts, your choices, and thus your guidance are in competition for directing what gets created in your life. You pray for guidance all the time (and even if you don’t, guidance pours into your energy field), but the guidance you receive is focused on accomplishing congruence in you. Congruence gives you the stamina to take on the greater potential of your life. You spend your life either healing yourself or helping to heal the world. The deciding factor is the courage to become congruent.

That having been said, consider the following:

Name five conflicts that you deal with the competition between your higher consciousness and your conscience.
Describe the difference in quality between guidance that is directed to your conscience and guidance that is directed to your higher consciousness.
Have you ever felt that your higher potential was being postponed from manifesting because of unfinished business that related to your conscience? What was or is that business?
What are your three greatest fears associated with becoming a congruent person?
What are three personal actions you can take that support your becoming a congruent person? And if you choose to sabotage your ability to become a more whole being, why would you do that?

I hope you enjoyed this Salon. It was a pleasure to work on this subject. I have a five-week book tour ahead of me. I will do my best to complete another Salon before I leave.

All my love,
