Hi Everyone:
The death of President Ronald Reagan set me thinking about the time of death and its astrological or cosmic significance as the opposite point of balance to our moment of birth. Why was Reagan called "home" just as the once-in-a-century eclipse of Venus and the Sun was taking place? Is that a coincidence that has meaning for America, especially in the high-voltage political atmosphere brewing in America during this election year? It is almost inconceivable that the loss of a President -- and all that such an event means in terms of the archetypal status of “President of the United States" -- would lack a cosmic counterpart. His death has certainly set in motion a collective process of memory in America, with the review of the legacy of a man who was known for his gentle, respectful nature. Whatever one may feel about some of his policies and actions while in office, Reagan was filled with optimism and a devotion to America that by all accounts was genuine and free of personal ambition or a desire for the acquisition of global power. He confronted the former Soviet Union, which he named the "Evil Empire,” with the intention of preventing a war as opposed to initiating one. And prevent a war, he did.
The subject of the cosmic timing of death brought to mind an experience I had sometime during the late 1980's or early 90's. I was in Paris and had the opportunity to meet Sogyal Rinpoche for dinner at his Paris apartment. In the taxi on the way there, I kept imagining what dinner with him would be like -- the setting, the food, and especially the conversation. We ended up sitting on the floor of his office dining on Chinese take-out. He has a reputation as the "laughing Rinpoche," so warm and gracious is he, and filled with rich stories, one of which came to mind as I considered the significance of our time of death. Prior to meeting Rinpoche, I had been reading books about the life and training of Tibetan monks -- most of which were anything but factual, as I learned. During the early years of our exposure to Eastern traditions, our fascination with unfamiliar spiritual beliefs, combined with our intrigue over "mystical power" -- referring to everything from healing to levitation to intuitive genius -- had created a mythical aura around the so-called secret powers of Tibetan monks. One author wrote that Tibetan monks are trained to "melt snow with their minds" and that, when asked about their spiritual talents, are also trained to "deflect" any discussion of them. I suspected that everything I had read to date amounted to nothing more than Western spiritual fantasies written by an amateur who had never even visited Tibet. But still, I had heard of a scientific study in which some Tibetan lamas were able to raise their body temperature enough during intense meditative trance to dry sheets soaked in cold water. What if such intriguing "facts" were actually true?
So while sitting on Rinpoche’s office floor eating Chinese food, I waited for the right opportunity to ask him about his spiritual training. I finally blurted out, "So, like, can you melt snow with your mind and levitate?" He laughed ... and laughed ... and laughed, which certainly answered my questions. But then he told me a story about his personal spiritual master that relates directly to my curiosity about whether our souls participate in the choice to release ourselves from physical life.
"My master was a most remarkable man,” Rinpoche said. “When it was time for his death, he gathered his students together and announced that he had consulted with his astrologers about when would be the perfect time for him to withdraw his spirit from the 'human soul.’ He wanted to cause the least amount of disruption and not set in motion any waves of psychic consequence as a result of his superior consciousness detaching from the vibrational field of physical life. His astrologers chose a day and time, and he then announced to us, his devotees, that he would be leaving us on that day. And on that very day, he removed himself from our company, entered into his personal temple, assumed a meditative posture, and left us."
Stories like that, as well as the reports of people who have had near-death experiences and are sent back to this life because "their time has not yet come to leave," suggest that the close of our physical life is as well-timed as is our descent to Earth. And so, we are back to the significance in the timing of the death of former President Ronald Reagan, the collective political atmosphere building in this nation, and the extraordinary astrological activity taking place right now. I am told by my astrological colleagues that the transit of Venus between the earth and the sun can awaken unfinished emotional business, but not necessarily of the "endless wounds" sort. Rather, it can bring us back to matters of the heart that need awakening and renewal. What might those be within the orbit of political thoughts and perceptions?
Perhaps the passing of Ronald Reagan will renew a heart connection to a time when optimism was more prevalent within the American public, a time when we lived in less fear. For even though we existed in a Cold War climate, few people really believed that “hot” war would break out. Perhaps it was simply a thought too large and horrific for us to comprehend. I suspect that was a part of our inability to conceive of the possibility, much less probability, that we would endure a nuclear holocaust. Reagan was noted for his deep reverence for America and his responsibility as a leader for the whole of this nation. He believed that his actions had to be honorable to the best of his ability to lead America forward in keeping with its spiritual history, at a time when we had entered an era of possible global destruction. Although many economists question his fiscal policies, especially the creation of large budget deficits fueled by his Star Wars program, at least he was able to change course when it was shown that his policies weren’t working. When his tax cut started creating deficits, he reversed himself and raised taxes. He was called the Great communicator in part because he was willing to work with members of the opposition party, and had a cordial relationship with Democratic House Speaker Tip O’Neill. The Reagan years were not free of the threat of terror, as we learned with the loss of more than 200 Marines in Lebanon. And we won’t even mention Iran-Contra. But I have to wonder how he would have led us through these dark days since 9/11, given his devotion to America's spiritual and humanitarian consciousness. Options and choices exist in every circumstance, no matter the depth of the hell we find ourselves in. What would Reagan have chosen? Would we be at war today? Would he have introduced something as horrifying as the Patriot Act? I can't answer that, but I can certainly wonder about it.
In closing, my heart and mind are filled with prayers for Ronald Reagan’s good soul and for the future of our beloved nation and for the global community of life. May he rest in peace.

CMED Institute Workshop Series:
From Intuition to Mysticism
From Intuition to Mysticism: A Personal Journey into Our Passion for God, was developed partly in response to this pressing social need for combining mystical life with the demands of work and family. But in addition, in the past forty years our culture has experienced a major expansion in psycho-spiritual vocabulary, as words such as "psyche," "chakras," the "collective unconscious," and "archetypes" have entered our public discourse. We have also begun to have access to more and more writings on mysticism, altered states of consciousness, and the spiritual process than had ever before been available to the mainstream. In response to this changing culture and the need for personal spiritual direction and support, this three-part CMED program has been designed to provide a year's instruction on the nature of intuition, the mystical process, and the art of healing. Participants will gather for a series of three intensive three-day weekends, during which the mystical writings and teachings of prominent spiritual figures of all traditions will be introduced and discussed. You will learn spiritual exercises, such as meditation and yoga, along with techniques for energy healing and spiritual journaling. We will also introduce students to the fundamentals of medical intuition as a personal practice. The hands-on work of the weekend workshops will be augmented with extensive reading assignments. Just as with the first CMED program on SACRED CONTRACTS, participants will have the pleasure of engaging with prominent guest lecturers with an expertise in these areas of study.
