PERSPECTIVES ON THE NEW YEAR

Jan 20, 2004

Here are a few paragraphs from the Caroline Myss Jan Salon.

January Salon 2004

PERSPECTIVES ON THE NEW YEAR

SPECIAL PRE-SALON NOTE: I am very aware that several Salon readers are not Americans and while this Salon has a decidedly "American" theme, let me emphasize that the greater theme of this Salon is "global consciousness" regarding matters of personal responsibility toward the care and management of a world in crisis.

I chose not to write the usual beginning-of-the-year piece about introspection and new beginnings.....you don't need a Salon about that from me since you no doubt are already aware of the cycle of endings and beginnings and New Year's resolutions, etc. So I'll just pass on that subject. That having been decided, I have given a great deal of thought about what to write as the Salon for the beginning of the year, hesitating to approach the subject I really want to write about. Then today I read a quote by Carl Jung, and his perspective convinced me that I should pursue a subject matter near and dear to my heart and soul - namely, how should we approach our social and political obligations when we live in a time when the world culture has never been more fragile?

I've rarely written about politics and the few comments (well, maybe not so few) I have made actually drew some email responses about how I should avoid the subject of politics. Why? I wondered, and I still wonder, especially since I have never written a full-length article expressing my personal feelings about the political direction of America. Nevertheless, I decided to avoid any mention of politics, but I was never comfortable with my decision. I find it such a curious fact-of-life these days that people speak so openly about their personal histories, including any number of moral and sexual violations from childhood, but shrink in the face of a political discussion, maintaining that politics should remain a personal matter or that the subject is somehow inappropriate for a spiritual forum. I don't quite understand how politics can possibly qualify as more personal than molestation or incest, but that's me, much less how any subject that engages consciousness can or should be considered off-limits.

Then I read this quote by Jung, a commentary written by a Swiss genius about a world in crisis pre-World War II: "The critical state of things - socially and politically - has such a tremendous influence on the psychic life of an individual that the doctor must follow its effects with more than usual attention. As he (analyst) has a responsibility toward his patient, he cannot afford to withdraw to the peaceful island of undisturbed scientific work, but must constantly descend into the arena o world events in order to join in the battle of conflicting passions and opinions. Were he to remain aloof from the tumult, the calamity of his time would reach him only from afar, and his patient's suffering would find neither ear nor understanding. He would be at a loss to know how to talk to him (patient) and to help him out of his isolation. For this reason, the psychologist cannot avoid coming to grips with contemporary history."
(Collected Words 10, p. 177)

I was absolutely ecstatic after I read this paragraph by Jung, not because I intend to carry on about politics and my own views; rather because Jung so elegantly articulated what I so strongly feel - which is that each of us who has anything to do with any one else remotely related to healing - from massage to aromatherapy to allopathic medicine to therapy to a dedication to promoting global awareness - is obligated by the very requirements of the art of healing to maintain an active awareness of the social and political psychic field. This obligation is all the more essential because we now live in a psychic culture and society and it is impossible to engage with each other in a truly effective healing mode without simultaneously having an awareness of the psychic influences in the collective that contribute in some way to each of our fields of health.

I have had many, many people comment to me that they don't watch the news because it's "just too negative"; yet, they consider themselves "aware" people who are committed to peace. While I agree that you can be committed to peace no matter what's on television, can you really be of vital conscious service to this planet by choosing to avoid news that you find upsetting? Is that not an invitation for evil to take charge when good people turn the other way? I find it a bit difficult to understand why someone committed to peace would choose to avoid contact with world events. But even more to the point, IF consciousness is the one human element that we are banking on as a means of survival through these ragingly difficult times, then how can going unconscious by avoiding news that is just "too negative" help to heal the negative? If any one should watch the news, it's people whose business and lifestyle are dedicated to making this world a better place. If not them, if not you, then who?

The future will always be an uncertain domain; but it is also the domain of potential new beginnings. This is the nature of life. But the ingredients that exist in the collective atmosphere, like the makings of a recipe for soup just waiting for the chef, have never been more volatile. We've never had so many global problems erupting at the same time, from epidemics to bio-terror to mad cow disease to water shortages all over the place to growing shortages of environmental products with a future that only promises more of the same. And looking in a technical direction, we have internet hackers and crime, stolen identities and global spying on individuals the likes of which would make 007 look like an amateur. Sometimes when I have mentioned this overwhelming list of planetary challenges, I have been accused of being a pessimist. A pessimist? Hardly. If I weren't at heart an optimist who believes that even the worst scenario can be altered, I would not bother to mention a thing. I would just sit back and wait for the worst.

Give a thought or two to your place in the scheme of things, and at the very least, become mindful that the collective climate in these volatile times has an impact on the health and well-being of your own psyche and spirit. Next time you feel depressed or anxious, the source of that tension may not be rooted in you at all.

I wish every one of you a blessed 2004. Seems like just yesterday we were preparing for Y2K. Whewie, time doth fly.

During these past months, the schedule for my Salons has been a bit erratic. Between surgery and time spent out of the office, I have not had the quality of time required to maintain a monthly commitment. My new year's resolution to have my Salon's in your email box on time....

God bless -
Caroline
