Dear All:

It's been a long time since I have had the opportunity to write a few words to all of you. I have been spending most of this year on the road doing workshops and lectures. I have my final overseas group trip coming up to Greece this month, which I am hopeful will turn out to be lovely since I am excited about exploring the theme of our interior "mystery schools" in the land from which the great Mystery Schools emerged thousands of years ago.

Traveling as I do is a multi-level gift. Not only do I get to sleep in hotel rooms all over the world, but - here's the important part - I have the blessing of engaging in so many conversations with people from every possible background and numerous cultures. Understandably much of this year's conversations have included dialogs on the world since 91l, particularly pondering whether we are headed for a war. A war would only be one more horror on top of all that has happened since that date, although most certainly a horror greater than we can imagine. This possibility is what has motivated my sending this e-newsletter to all of you today.

I consider everyone I meet in my work to be a peacemaker. For some people, that role is more obvious in that it manifests in an occupation or some external volunteer effort that is clearly associated with making our world a better place. For others, they support the creation of a peaceful world by the dedicated effort they put into rearing children to be loving and conscious individuals. And to all of us, no matter who or where we are, a commitment to living a "symbolic life", which is the subject of my September Salon - that is going to be two days late due to my absurd schedule (forgive me, all, I try my best, believe it or not, I actually thought today was still September....) - is perhaps the greatest energetic dedication to life that we share as a spiritual community.

Working for peace in the world has given birth to many, many projects and organizations. So many of them are brilliant and have no doubt already prevented countless disasters from occurring. I would go so far as to say without the efforts of Green Peace, the world Environmental Movement, Human Rights Activists, and so many more, the world would be all the more vulnerable.

For years now I have dedicated my own peace efforts and global activity through The State of the World Forum, an international organization that is dedicated to integrating world systems toward creating a peaceful planet. This organization began as the Mikail Gorbachev Foundation and matured into a world-wide Forum that has the support of people from every walk of life, from prime ministers to individuals seeking a collective body of support as a means to manifest their efforts in the world. Prior to this moment in time, my work with the Forum was a part of my personal life. Now I am inviting all of you to familiarize yourself with the peace-making efforts of the Forum because it may, in some way, compliment who you are and how you would like to explore a greater expression of your life. And now...having said that....I need to return to today's task of completing the September Salon....since according to so many, today is, in fact, October. I am especially involved in the theme of being called to live a "symbolic life" because what is increasingly apparent is that people need now, perhaps more than ever before, to find that higher meaning and purpose in life in order to maneuver through the months and years ahead. But even beyond the obvious level of turmoil that now envelops the world, there is something emerging in all of us that is yearning for a quality of Divine intimacy in our personal spiritual life. This yearning is a passionate calling to enter into a dimension of life that communicates in energy, light, and guidance. I suspect many of you can resonate to what I am writing. And so I promise you that I will have the September Salon to you in a few days AND October's will arrive in October.....how's that?

CORAGEOUS HOPE

We are living in the most compassionate country in the world facing our greatest threat from those who hate our freedom and our respect for human rights. In our search for understanding the forces that are committed to our destruction, we have denied the existence of evil by giving it psychiatric labels and sociological explanations. This statement may appear odd coming from a clinical psychologist, but I believe that our need to understand the pain of others has lead us to interpret those who are trying to destroy us as misguided, deprived or mentally ill. While inequities contribute to rage we must not confuse it with evil.

In times of grief and terror I want to offer what I call courageous hope which is the force that makes a mother fight a criminal attacking her child with a knife or a public servant who gives his or her life to save another in an emergency. We all have this force. It is a combination of righteous anger and a commitment to honor the life of the innocent we love at our own peril. But before we can understand this courageous hope we must face the existence of evil.

If we look at fear and love at opposite poles we can visualize how the negative emotions of rage, envy and jealousy are manifestations of fear, while the more evolved emotions like empathy, compassion and benevolence spring from love. Considering this spectrum of emotions, I suggest that fear is fueled by ignorance and love is nourished by hope. Now imagine for a moment what could exist beyond the end of each pole of this emotional spectrum I am presenting? By this simple exercise we can begin to explore the best and worst of humanity without the usual politically correct models that exclude evil and deny divinity.

I suggest that if we go beyond the horizons of fear we find evil and if venture beyond love we encounter divinity. A distinction can be made here to explain the difference between fear and evil as well as love and divinity. While fear is built on ignorance (lack of sufficient knowledge), evil is based on malevolence. Fear is an emotion that seeks understanding whereas evil is a force with the sole purpose of inflicting suffering and destroying love. I believe that fear can be conquered with knowledge and compassion because it is an emotion that lacks information and love. On the other hand, since evil is outside of the humane spectrum, it cannot be resolved with knowledge nor conquered with love. Evil must me destroyed with courageous hope. The terrorists of this world are not lacking knowledge nor do they want to be introduced to love. They live to inflict suffering and view compassion as weakness to be manipulated.

How can courageous hope give us strength in the face of evil? If we protect our innocent and realize that evil must be destroyed, then we can return to our humane spectrum to resolve fear with knowledge. On September 11, we were not attacked by “sick” or “fearful” people and we are not to blame for the infamy they committed. We were assaulted by barbarians who live in their malevolence and no amount of giving or understanding will deter them from their mission to destroy our love for freedom and our respect for human rights.

Now that I have presented the darkness of evil beyond the pole of fear, we can look at the most beautiful gift of our humanity beyond the pole of love. I believe that although love brings out the best in each of us, it still lacks the oneness without boundaries that we find in our divinity when we go beyond the most evolved human emotions. As we explore beyond the pole of love, we find that our divinity is the power of our faith and the compassion of our humanity to see beyond personal gains. Fear can be resolved with compassionate knowledge and love can be expanded to a divinity where when we nourish or hurt others we are nourishing or hurting ourselves.

What about evil? My treatise may appear contradictory. How can we reach our divinity where we are all one and at the same time destroy evil? Is evil not part of us? With our gift of free will, we have a transcendental choice to step into divinity or into darkness. Even in the sacred scriptures of most religions we find fallen angels who chose malevolence over grace. We can end our fear by understanding that free will is a gift to honor or to destroy and that while we should respect that choice, it does not mean that we should excuse it, confuse it with fear, nor allow it to destroy us. Hope feeds love and faith in our divinity marshals courage to fight the evil that chooses malevolence over grace.

I propose that during these times of turbulence we can evolve by increasing our knowledge to reduce our fears and by expressing our love to reach our divinity, while understanding that evil must be confronted with courageous hope before we can evolve on this beautiful journey we call life.

The Miraval Retreat

In January 2003, I will introduce the first of what will be an annual retreat program to be held at the Miraval Spa in Arizona (Catalina). The beginning of the year inspires so many people to want to engage in a fresh start -- to let go of old patterns and to introduce new dynamics for healthy lives and healthy relationships. Starting fresh is supported by body work and beauty treatments accompanied by a cleansing and revitalizing nutritional program. My goal in hosting a retreat in an exquisite health spa is to explore our creative intentions while nurturing our bodies. Miraval provides precisely the right atmosphere to accomplish this goal. It is the perfect location for a five-day program of creative interior and exterior relaxation that will address physical, emotional, and spiritual rejuvenation. Most of us find it so difficult to treat themselves to exquisite self-care, and yet this is precisely the gift that infuses us with the energy we need to handle a demanding life, regardless of whether the demands come from the business or personal world or both.

I have created a schedule that will facilitate both pleasure and inner work. In this more intimate setting, I will share experiences and profound teachings that are more suited to a peaceful atmosphere than to a large workshop setting. Exploring the interior work and healing guidance of mystics, saints, and spiritual teachers refreshes one's soul in a way that few things can. Absorbing their wisdom is like bathing in hope, inspiration, and faith. This is one of the most life-changing programs that I have been given the privilege to create.
